It is July 1993 in Akcakoca district of the Black Sea region; Mahmut the fisherman sails on a Saturday morning as he realizes something floating in the sea. He curiously approaches the block and ties it to his boat. It is none other than a Lenin statue, heavy from floating in the sea, coming from an unknown destination. Welcome Lenin chronicles the story of the Lenin statue, most likely thrown away after the collapse of the Soviet Union, traveled for almost two years in the Black Sea to be eventually put “under protection” in a dusty storage room in a municipality building.
